What are Full and Partial Dentures?
A partial denture is a set a false teeth that will replace several missing teeth on an arch. The base of a partial is typically made out of acrylic. A partial denture is held in place with one of several types of clasps including a cast metal clasp, acrylic clasp, or with flexible arms. This set of false teeth must be removed nightly for cleaning and to rest the gums.
Full dentures are best for patients who are missing full arches of teeth, either on the top or bottom. The base of the denture is made of acrylic which mimics the color and appearance of gum tissue. Fused to this base are the carefully crafted false teeth. They will be fabricated from impressions of your teeth so it looks natural in your mouth.
Although both full and partial dentures may be removable or secured by dental implants, we recommend implant secured dentures over removable options. Traditional snap on dentures or removable dentures that require messy adhesives are not fully secured in the mouth. Dr. Morris can secure natural-looking dentures with several dental implants. Dental implants replace missing teeth at the tooth socket and fuse with the jawbone for a long-lasting restoration.
Receiving Implant-Supported Dentures
Before denture treatment, Dr. Morris will make sure that patients are in good oral health with enough bone tissue to support dental implants. He will recommend infection treatment or bone grafting prior to the dental implant procedure. Patients need to have healthy teeth and gums to ensure a stable and long lasting result.
To begin treatment, Dr. Morris takes impressions of the teeth and gums. These impressions are not only used to fabricate the dentures and crowns but to also determine where the dental implants will be placed. Once Dr. Morris has completed his treatment planning, he surgically inserts the dental implants into the jaw bone. The dental implants heal over a 3 to 6 month period. They fuse to the jawbone and create a stable foundation for the dentures.
After the dental implants are healed and the dentures and dental crowns are complete, Dr. Morris will attach the restoration to the implants.
